JANUARY-2015 (Updated on : 25th January 2015)
Dear Parents / Guardians,
Bicentenary Celebrations of the birth of Don Bosco, founder of the Salesian Order 1815-2015 - An invitation to celebrate.
On Friday 30th January 2015 Salesian College will celebrate the Bicentenary of the birth of Don Bosco, founder of the Salesian order. The school will celebrate with a special mass. It is our hope that invited guests, students, teachers and staff will appreciate the significance and importance of this day for the school ethos. The Salesian approach and the preventive system is unique to the Salesian order and one that we strive in the school to maintain.
The theme for our mass this year is “Let your dreams fly high”. Our school Chaplain and our Religious Education Department are working hard to prepare for this celebration. The mass will take place on Friday 30th January at 12.00pm. We hope all our students will fully participate in the celebration. We are very proud to say that our students always behave and enter in to the spirit of any of our Eucharistic celebrations. We would like to extend an invitation to any parent who would like to join us for our celebration. Guests and students are asked to be seated in the hall by 11.50am. Our mass will be celebrated by Fr. Michael Casey, Provincial Leader of the Salesian Community in Ireland. Students will attend class as normal on Friday morning. The Board of Management and the Trustees will mark this occasion with a small gift to our students and students will finish early on this Friday after the mass, 1.30pm approximately.
In increasingly challenging times it is a privilege to work in Salesian College. The teachings of Don Bosco are an integral part of our work here in the school. We endeavour to live the Salesian ethos and let it influence our teaching and how we guide and lead our students on their educational path.
Random Act of Kindness Day – Wednesday 28th January.
As part of our Bicentenary Celebrations, we will encourage all our students to do something kind for their fellow man. On Wednesday 28th we will celebrate a “Random act of kindness day”. We will invite students to reflect on the importance of being kind and generous to each other and also to their family and friends. To quote a poet Seneca, “Wherever there is a human being there is the opportunity to act with kindness”.
Guest Speaker – Mrs.Elma Walsh – mother of Dónal Walsh –Friday 23rd January.
I thank our school Chaplain, Fr.Alphonse, who invited Mrs.Walsh to the school to speak with our 5th and 6th year students about the life and death of her young son Dónal Walsh. Dónal’s story received national coverage when he openly spoke of his belief in the importance of life and making the most of every opportunity we are given. Mrs.Walsh spoke of the importance of faith and a positive and strong mental health for all young men. This was a very moving presentation from Mrs.Walsh. I thank and complement our senior students for their excellent behaviour and the warm welcome they extended to our guest. As a school we hope this presentation will encourage our senior students to be conscious of the importance of taking time out, being focused, having faith in their skills and talents and to use them to the maximum.
Ceangail & Cinnirí – Cycle Against Suicide Student Leaders Congress
Well done to all our Ceangail & Cinnirí student representatives who attended the Cycle Against Suicide Student Leaders Congress in the RDS on Wednesday 15th January. Cycle Against Suicide is an initiative started by Irish entrepreneur, Jim Breen, as a result of his appearance on RTE’s The Secret Millionaire programme. The main objective of the Cycle is to raise awareness of the considerable help and supports that are available for anyone battling depression, self-harm, at risk of suicide or those bereaved by suicide. This was a national event with guest presentations from Bressie, Sonia O’Sullivan and Colm Hayes from 2 FM. Our Ceangail & Cinnirí Leaders reported that this was a very worthwhile event.
Extra-Curricular activities
We congratulate all our students who are taking part in our many extra-curricular activities in the school. Well done to the students who have started basketball training after school and we encourage the GAA players to continue with their strength and conditioning sessions. We are very proud of our Senior GAA team and the students who have worn the school jersey representing Salesian College for the last 5-6 years. We hope they will take with them many happy memories of their sporting achievements for the school. Our Intermediate and Senior athletes had great success at the West Leinster Athletics meeting on Wednesday 21st January. Salesian College leads the organisation of this event which takes places every year in the Phoenix Park. Congratulations to Cian May who came second in his race and to the Intermediate and Senior squads who have qualified for the Leinster Competition. Training continues after school on Friday. Our thanks to Mr.Leonard, Mr.Mullin, Mr.Mc Govern, Mr.Cryan and Mr.Malone for their work at this major event.

6th Year Mock Interviews
I would like to take the opportunity to sincerely thank all our guest interviewers who volunteered their time and their expertise on Wednesday 14th January for our Leaving Certificate mock interviews. Our students were complimented on their excellent presentation and their educational potential and maturity. It is a credit to all involved that this event will assist our students in their future educational and career paths.
Mock Exams
We encourage all our Junior and Leaving Certificate students to concentrate and focus on their school and home work. I thank Ms. Harris, Guidance Counsellor, who recently organised a special study skills workshop for third year students. Our Year Heads have met with individual students following their Term 1 exams. Students have been asked to concentrate more on the organisation of their study timetable and their overall approach to work. We remind all parents to ensure all homework is recorded, checked and the journal is signed once a week. Junior and Leaving Certificate students will receive their mock exam timetable shortly. There are still outstanding mock fees to be paid and I would ask parents and guardians to ensure this fee is paid for the exam papers and correction fees.
Jackets and student belongings.
We remind students that is it their responsibility to ensure they bring home all their belongings, jackets, coats, bags, kit bags and so on every day. Each Friday we collect articles from around the school which students have not brought home with them. After two weeks these unclaimed articles will be donated to charity.
Mobile Phones
We would like to remind all parents and students that students are not allowed use mobile phones in the school. Students who breach this school rule will be sanctioned.
