SCHOOL NEWSLETTER - SEPTEMBER 2013
Thuiste, a chara,
The new school year has begun. We welcome all our new first year students and wish them well. We thank our Ceangail and Cinnirí teams who have ensured they are well looked after and are familiar with their new surroundings. We welcome back all of our other students and wish them every success in their studies and their activities this year.
This is a very important letter and we would ask all parents to read it carefully and to make note of the information it contains as it will update you on events and changes taking place in Salesian College.
Leaving Certificate 2013 Success!
On behalf of all the teachers and students, we would like to congratulate our Leaving Certificate students of 2013. As a school we were extremely pleased with the results. We are also immensely proud of Phillip Gavin who received the maximum Leaving Certificate result of 6A1s. Phillip will begin his university education now in Trinity College studying Law and German. We also congratulate Darragh Newman (6th year student of the year) and Eoghan Fogarty who also received over 600 points. Over 20% of our students achieved the equivalent of over 450 points. This is a credit to their dedication, their teachers and parents support. We are also very happy that the majority of our students surpassed their expectations and were successful in their 3rd level choice of course. In Salesian College we endeavour to encourage, promote and excel in the academic development of our students. Based on this year’s results, we are very happy with our accomplished students and their excellent high results. Maith sibh agus beir bua!
Junior Certificate Results 2013 – Wednesday 11th September.
We hope our Junior Certificate students will achieve just as high results as our Leaving Certificate students. The results will be presented on Wednesday 11th at 2.40pm. All Junior Certificate students will assemble in the hall in their tutor group. The Year head and Principal will address the students. We would like to invite parents to attend this presentation. As is normal, all students should attend school on Thursday. We ask parents for their cooperation in this matter as on the Thursday subject levels and classes are reorganised based on the J.C results, therefore it is important for all students to attend. Students in 5th year who already have their Junior Certificate results will finish school at 2.40pm on Wednesday.
Awards night
We look forward to celebrating our Awards night on Thursday 26th of September. Parents and students who have been nominated for a prize will be invited to attend. It will be a great evening of celebration and acknowledgement of our students who have excelled during the academic year 2012-2013.
New Rector & Members of our Salesian Community
We wish Fr. Daniel Carroll, former Principal and Chaplain of Salesian College for over 19 years all the very best in his new posting as Rector of Salesian College Pallaskenry. We thank Fr. Dan for his years of service to the education and faith development of our students. We also wish Fr. Pat Egan every success in his new posting in Crumlin as Secretary to the Salesian Provincial. Fr. Pat will be missed as our resident photographer and also commentator on our wonderful Sports Day.
In turn we welcome Fr. Koenraad Van Gucht, new Salesian House Rector, Fr. Alphonse, our new Chaplain and Fr. Ebejer. We welcome them in friendship and in the full knowledge that they will also become valued and respected members of Salesian College. Fr. Koenradd will celebrate the opening of our new school year with the first mass of the year on Friday 27th September.
Afterschool Study & Evening Study
We encourage all our students, but in particular our exam year students to attend afterschool study. An analysis of our students who have achieved very high academic results over the last 2 years since we have extended our study sessions has clearly shown that the students who attend supervised study achieve high results. We strongly believe this is because the organised and supervised environment helps students focus on their studies, but also allows them to enjoy other hobbies and extra-curricular activities once the study sessions are completed. Forms are available from the Deputy Principals’ office.
Parents' Association Meeting Tuesday 10th September & AGM Tuesday 1st October.
As parents, you play an integral role in your son's education. We would like to thank all our parents for their work in ensuring that students were well prepared for school and this has led to a good and organised start to the year. In our school the Parents' Association is an extremely important and effective body. This year their Annual General Meeting will take place on 1st October with a guest speaker, Dr. Fergus Heffernan, Psychologist and Psychotherapist. I would strongly encourage all parents to attend this meeting as our guest speaker will focus on building positive and productive relationships with teenagers. The first meeting of the year will take place on Tuesday 10th for the present members 8.00pm, new building.
Code of Behaviour Amendments
A copy of the ratified amendments to the school Code of Behaviour are included in this letter. All parents are urged to read these amendments and discuss them with their sons.
School Openings Hours& Student belongings
The school building officially opens at 8.30am and closes at 5.00pm. After this time only students who are participating in extra-curricular activities and study may remain in the building. We must insist that all students take home with them all their belongings, PE bags, coats, jackets etc.
Book Grant
Applications for assistance towards the cost of school books will be accepted. Please contact the school for an application form.
Attendance & Punctuality
We constantly strive to improve the teaching and learning process in our school. Two of the biggest obstacles to student learning are poor attendance and lateness to school or to class. We ask all parents to work with us to improve the attendance and punctuality records of their son. In addition, we would ask parents not to take their son on holidays outside of the official school holiday times.
Lunchtime Arrangements
Students who wish to go home for lunch time must have a lunch pass. Only students carrying this pass will be allowed go home at lunchtime. They must produce the pass to any teacher who asks to see it. It does not mean students may leave the school premises and simply remain outside the school grounds or go down town. If a student is outside the school grounds at lunchtime without this pass, or he does not go home as agreed the pass will be removed and he will be sanctioned. All students must return to the premises 5 minutes before the end of lunch. In effect, this means that a student has only 35 minutes to go home, have lunch and return to school.
Contacting the school
Please use the school journal for notes and messages to the school. As explained in the Code of Behaviour, please deal with issues of a more private nature in a letter and place it in an envelope for the attention of the person concerned. If you are contacting the school by phone please ask for the specific subject teacher or form teacher. If they are not available the school Secretary will take your details and pass the message on to the teacher to return the call as soon as possible. Due to the large number of students in the school, we would kindly ask parents not to drop items in to the school office as we cannot guarantee that the students will receive them.
Collecting Students & Entry on to school grounds.
At the beginning and end of the school day parents / guardians are not allowed on to the school grounds to park /drop off/ collect their sons. This is for the health and safety of your sons. You will be asked to move should you be found on the school premises. We are mindful that there are exceptions in the case of a student who has sustained an injury e.g. broken leg etc., or in the case of a student with a specific disability which limits his movement. In accordance with the relevant sections of the Occupiers Liability Act 1995, the school takes no responsibility for any loss or damage that occurs as the result of driving onto school grounds.
Applied Maths
Extra Applied Maths classes will begin next week. Please contact Mr. Reilly for details.
School Web-site
We invite parents to check our web-site for regular updates on school events.
All parents should check and sign the journals once a week, and every night for first students. We ask all parents to encourage a positive work ethos and ensure that they have a quiet area for homework and study. On behalf of all the teachers and members of staff we wish our students a happy and good-working new year
